I’ve made quite a few gingerbread houses in my time, but this year was not my year. Well, actually it was last year, I suppose.
Everything that could go wrong, did. I undercooked the gingerbread, I overcooked the gingerbread, I made too much icing, I made too little icing, I cut the wrong shapes, I used the wrong pieces… I tell you, disaster! Out of about 6 batches of gingerbread, I got two houses. That’s not an impressive ratio! We had a LOT of gingerbread left over to chomp on. It was yummy though. :)
Anyway, here they are. You may notice that the roof of the larger one is sagging, whoops! I covered it in Smarties to make up for it. :) That one was a present for our lovely friends M&J.
The gingerbread recipe that I used is the same as the gingerbread cookies I made last month, and you can find it here. :)
We made a gingerbread house this past Christmas. It was far from perfect but a lot of fun to decorate.
Your houses look great!
Thanks :D. They are fun aren’t they :). Maybe I will practice during the year haha
my daughter, who has loved eating it, wants us to make another one at the weekend! Getting the walls to stick together was a bit of a challenge!
Sounds like a plan to me haha! What icing did you use? I beat 2 egg whites and added icing sugar while beating until the mixture was really really thick and stiff, and then put it in a piping bag – that worked really well, it held together in about 10 seconds.
I used a packet of royal icing sugar that you just add water too. But I don’t think I whisked it long enough. I’ll have a go at doing whet you did!
They are fun!! We made a foam gingerbread house this year.
Oooh that’s cool, how did that work? Was it edible?
So impressive! I love these!
Haha thanks! I’m glad I got at least two nice houses out of the mountain of gingerbread that I wasted :p
The house you made for us was so yummy! What a great idea. And even though you say you had problems we couldn’t tell which helps demonstrate the obvious- you are a very talented person :)
Haha thanks :). I’m glad it tasted all right at least!
